Trump Says Strait of Hormuz Is Open, Iran Blockade Remains

Trump and Iran’s foreign minister both signaled resumed commercial passage through the key shipping route on Friday.

President Donald Trump said Friday that the Strait of Hormuz is open to commercial traffic, but that a U.S. naval blockade aimed only at Iran will remain in place until what he described as a transaction with Tehran is complete.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the strait is “completely open and ready for business and full passage,” while the blockade will remain “in full force and effect” as it pertains to Iran only. He added that the process should move quickly because “most of the points are already negotiated.”

Earlier Friday, Trump wrote in another Truth Social post that Iran had announced the strait was “fully open and ready for full passage.” He did not give further details in that post.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also said commercial shipping could move through the waterway during the ceasefire period. In a post on X, Araghchi said that, in line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz had been declared completely open for the remaining period of the ceasefire, using the coordinated route already announced by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation.

Both statements said commercial passage through the strait was open on Friday. Trump’s post also said the naval blockade tied to Iran would remain in effect, though neither side provided additional operational details in the material provided.
