Spain have returned back to the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking zenith following the end of Argentina’s record streak at No. 1 and awarding La Roja its inaugural top ranking in more than a decade, FIFA revealed Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025. France rises to second and Argentina to third in the new table, released Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, FIFA said.
The reshuffle caps a solid September window for Spain and signals an intense battle between the prime sides. Portugal creep into fifth place, while Croatia and Italy recapture the top level at ninth and 10th place, respectively. Brazil fall to sixth place, and Germany drop three places to 12th—below the top 10 for the first time since October 2024. Morocco trail them by only one position at 11th place.
Slovakia are the month’s biggest climbers, jumping 10 spots to 42nd after two qualification wins, including a surprise win over Germany. In all, 215 “relevant national-team matches” went into this release of the ranking after a frantic schedule of World Cup qualifiers across Africa, Europe and the Americas.
The new system has actual importance beyond boasts. FIFA’s ranking is utilized in competitions and can affect the draw pots, the schedule, and how national federations prepare big friendly. FIFA says that the next update will be on October 23, 2025.
