King Charles Hosts President Trump for State Visit at Windsor Castle

Royal salute, carriage procession, and state banquet underscore the “enduring bond” between the U.S. and U.K.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla welcomed President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to the United Kingdom on Wednesday for a state visit at Windsor Castle.

The president and first lady arrived on the castle grounds and were greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales before meeting Their Majesties. A royal salute was fired from the East Lawn and at the Tower of London to mark the occasion, the Royal palace said.

The two couples then joined the King and Queen for a carriage procession through the Windsor estate toward the castle. The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment provided the Sovereign’s Escort, and the route was lined by members of the armed forces with three military bands from the Royal Marines, the Army and the Royal Air Force.

At the Quadrangle, a Guard of Honour greeted the party bearing the state colours of the Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards and Scots Guards. The palace noted it was the first time three state colours had appeared at such an event; by convention, only one would be on parade.

Trump stood with the King on the royal dais before inspecting the Guard of Honour. The Trumps and Their Majesties later had lunch in the State Dining Room with members of the Royal Family and viewed a special display from the Royal Collection highlighting historic ties to the United States in the Green Drawing Room.

In the evening, the King, the Queen and members of the Royal Family hosted a state banquet in St. George’s Hall for the president and first lady. According to the Royal Family, both leaders spoke. In front of diplomats, sports stars, and IT CEOs, the King remarked about the “enduring bond between our great nations.”

In the UK, state visits are the best way to show diplomatic hospitality. They include military honors, ceremonial processions, and formal encounters that are supposed to make the two countries closer. The palace’s statement didn’t provide anything more about the schedule.
