Vozinha’s Mother to Get Visa for Cabo Verde’s World Cup Match Sunday

Mother and son set to reunite in Miami after a State Department intervention

The mother of Cabo Verde goalkeeper Josimar “Vozinha” Dias will secure a visa in time to attend her son’s World Cup match against Uruguay on Sunday, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Wednesday.

Jeffries announced the development days after Vozinha tearfully said his mother could not watch Cabo Verde’s World Cup debut in person because of visa complications.

After learning of the situation, Jeffries said he spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and asked the State Department to help the goalkeeper’s mother attend the team’s next match.

Vozinha’s mother will be able to secure a visa in time for Sunday’s game, and all fees have been waived consistent with official policy, according to the statement.

Travel arrangements are being made for the goalkeeper and his mother to reunite in Miami, Jeffries said.

The national team, known as the Blue Sharks, held Spain to a draw Monday in its first World Cup appearance, a result Jeffries said shocked and inspired fans worldwide.

Jeffries thanked Rubio, State Department officials, the government of Cabo Verde and FIFA for working together on the matter.
