US, Iran Cite Progress in Doha Talks; Next Round After Khamenei Funeral

Mediators say momentum from the Lake Lucerne Summit carried into Doha as the 60-day negotiating window continues.

Qatari and Pakistani mediators reported positive progress Wednesday after holding separate meetings with U.S. and Iranian negotiators in Doha on implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said.

The next meeting will be scheduled “at the earliest possible time” after funeral processions for the former Iranian supreme leader, the statement said.

The Doha round builds on the Lake Lucerne Summit, where the two sides agreed June 21-22 in Switzerland on a roadmap toward a final deal within 60 days, mediators said at the time.

President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian remotely signed the memorandum on June 17, extending a ceasefire in the war that began Feb. 28. The 14-point interim deal covers reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing the U.S. naval blockade and negotiating sanctions and nuclear issues.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters this week’s talks focused on Tehran’s frozen assets and the Strait of Hormuz. The mediators’ statement did not confirm the agenda.

Ali Khamenei, killed in a February strike, will be honored in ceremonies beginning July 4 in Tehran, with burial July 9 in Mashhad, Iranian state media reported.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as information becomes available.
