Ukrainian forces struck an oil refinery in Moscow’s Kapotnya district on Tuesday. The targeted facility processes 250,000 barrels of oil a day and supplies up to 40% of the region’s fuel.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attack Tuesday in a post on X. He credited the Security Service of Ukraine, the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Special Operations Forces, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, and the Missile Forces for carrying out the strike.
“This time, the Moscow region felt the reach of Ukraine’s long-range capabilities,” Zelenskyy said. “An oil refinery was hit at a distance of 500 kilometers.”
Russia must be forced to end its war against our people. Ukraine’s long-range weapons are one of the important components of such pressure. — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy said the strike was meant to pressure Russia into ending the war. “Russia must be forced to end its war against our people,” he wrote. “Ukraine’s long-range weapons are one of the important components of such pressure.”
Russian air defenses downed dozens of drones during the operation, according to Russian officials. No casualties were reported.
The strike follows a surge in Ukrainian long-range drone attacks this year. Moscow has faced fuel shortages ahead of the operation.
Zelenskyy called the operation “a just response to Russian strikes — and to the dragging out of a war that must be ended.”
