Trump Says He Ordered DOJ to Investigate Democrats

Trump accused Democrats of extortion and lawfare, named Sen. Elissa Slotkin, and said threatening letters were sent to many innocent people

WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice will investigate Democrats, President Donald Trump said Saturday on Truth Social. Trump tied the order to what he called threats of impeachment and punishment against the attorney general of the United States and others.

Trump wrote that Democrats admit they have no reason for the threats and that no impeachable acts have been committed. He called the threats “extortion at the highest level” and said the people behind them should be held accountable.

He accused Democrats of threatening Republican donors with imprisonment “just because they happen to be Republicans, or Republican supporters.” He called that “Weaponization and Lawfare at another level.”

Trump singled out Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan. He said she is saying she will go after young people who believe in Republican values or show even the slightest inclination to be a Republican, and he added, “Republicans should get smart, fast!”

He said threatening letters have been sent by Democratic political leaders to many people, all of them innocent.

“By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!”

Beyond the attorney general, the post named no threatened official. It did not identify any letter or case, and no response from Democrats or from Slotkin was included. Trump cited no documents or other support for the claims.
