India has criticized remarks shared by U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social after a social media post referred to Indians and others in language New Delhi called “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste.”
Trump shared a Truth Social post featuring a transcript and video from conservative commentator Michael Savage. The commentary argued against U.S. birthright citizenship and claimed immigrants from countries including India and China were using the provision to bring family members into the United States.
“A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet,” Savage said in the transcript shared by Trump.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded on April 23, 2026, after questions were raised about the post. Official Spokesperson Shri Randhir Jaiswal said India had seen the comments, along with a later response from the U.S. Embassy.
“We have seen the comments, as also the subsequent statement issued by the US Embassy in response. The remarks are obviously uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” Jaiswal said, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Jaiswal said the remarks did not match the state of India-U.S. ties.
“They certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which has long been based on mutual respect and shared interests,” he said.
A U.S. Embassy spokesperson in New Delhi later said Trump has described India as “a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top,” according to Reuters. The comment appeared to be a response to the criticism, though no separate full statement was found on the embassy’s public website.
The exchange came as Trump has continued to oppose birthright citizenship in the United States. Savage’s commentary was framed around that issue, arguing that citizenship for children born in the country should not rest only on court rulings.
The remarks also surfaced ahead of an expected visit to India by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in May. Indian media reports have said Rubio is likely to travel to India for meetings linked to bilateral relations and the Quad.
