Trump to Impose 25% Tariff on European Union Cars and Trucks

White House gives no specific date as EU stays silent on new auto import duties

President Donald Trump announced he will raise tariffs on European Union automobiles and trucks to 25%, saying the bloc has failed to honor an existing trade agreement.

Trump posted the announcement on Truth Social on Friday without naming the agreement or spelling out what the EU had done — or failed to do — to trigger the move.

“Based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States,” Trump wrote.

One carve-out applies: automakers that build their vehicles on American soil would pay nothing. Trump made clear the tariff targets only imports.

He put the current wave of domestic auto investment at more than $100 billion, calling it a record, and said new plants are already going up across the country. “These Plants, staffed with American Workers, will be opening soon,” he wrote.

The European Union had not responded publicly at the time of the announcement. Trump gave no date beyond next week.
