Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned Wednesday after coming under scrutiny over a business partnership with Deepak Bhatt, who is in custody in an investigation into the source of share investments and alleged money laundering.
Gurung announced his resignation in a statement on Facebook, saying he stepped down so an impartial investigation could proceed and so there would be no conflict of interest while he remained in office.
“I have resigned from the post of home minister effective today so that an impartial investigation can be carried out into matters related to me and so that no conflict of interest is seen while I remain in office, nor any effect on that process,” Gurung wrote.
In the statement, Gurung said he had taken public questions and comments about his share-related matters seriously. He said ethics mattered more than office and that public trust was paramount.
Referring to Nepal’s recent Gen Z-led protest movement, he said public life must remain clean and leadership must be accountable. He also said he had fulfilled his moral responsibility by resigning and appealed to journalists, the public and young people to stand for truth, honesty and self-correction.
Gurung had been in office for less than a month. He was sworn in on March 27, 2026, the English-calendar equivalent of Chaitra 13, 2082.
Gurung is the second minister to leave the Balen government. Earlier, Labor Minister Deepakkumar Sah was dismissed over accusations that he misused his official position to keep his wife in place at the Health Insurance Board. The prime minister removed Sah from office on the recommendation of the party’s disciplinary commission. Health Minister Nisha Mehta was also formally warned.
