Sambhav Sirohiya has resigned as managing director of Kantipur Media Group, citing serious disagreement with the company’s recent reporting, according to Kantipur.
Kantipur reported that Sirohiya informed all KMG employees in a message that his resignation took effect Thursday. In that note, he said he objected in particular to recent stories about then Home Minister Sudan Gurung.
Sirohiya said the allegations in those reports had been presented in a sensational way. “I cannot lead a transformation while lending my name to journalism I do not believe in,” he wrote.
According to Kantipur, the outlet’s reporting on Gurung was based on details of suspicious financial dealings obtained from sources in investigative agencies. The report said those stories included the facts contained in those details as well as unanswered questions.
In his resignation note, however, Sirohiya said the coverage had weakened the new government before it had a fair chance to work by pushing allegations that had not been proven.
Kantipur also reported that on Thursday morning Sirohiya posted screenshots on Facebook and X of Kantipur Television social media posts about Gurung. In that post, he wrote: “This looks like mission journalism, but I do not know whose mission it is.”
