18-Year-Old North Carolina Woman Charged in Alleged Plot Targeting Houston Jewish Community

FBI and Davidson County investigators say the case remains active after one adult and one juvenile were arrested.

A North Carolina woman is being held on a $10 million bond after authorities said she was linked to an alleged plot involving a possible attack on the Jewish community in Houston.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said Angelina Han Hicks, 18, of Lexington, was arrested April 22 after the FBI Charlotte Field Office received information that she may have been targeting members of the Jewish community for violence.

Sheriff’s officials said FBI agents and Davidson County detectives went to Hicks’ home on Linwood Southmont Road in Lexington after the tip. Investigators said evidence found there pointed to a planned mass-casualty attack involving Hicks and alleged co-conspirators.

The sheriff’s office said the alleged plan targeted Congregation Beth Israel in Houston, Texas.

Hicks was charged with felony conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon to kill or commit serious injury and felony conspiracy to commit murder. She was first taken before a magistrate and held without bond, authorities said. A Davidson County district court judge later set bond at $10 million.

The FBI Charlotte Field Office said its Joint Terrorism Task Force began investigating Tuesday evening after a tip was made to a North Carolina law enforcement agency. The FBI described the case as a multistate investigation and said one adult and one juvenile were arrested in connection with an alleged plan involving a Jewish Day School in Houston.

The FBI said the juvenile was charged in Harris County, Texas. Hicks is facing state charges in North Carolina.

Authorities have not released further details about the juvenile or the other alleged co-conspirators. The sheriff’s office said some alleged co-conspirators live outside North Carolina and that the FBI investigation remains active.

Hicks is being held at the Davidson County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in Davidson County District Court on May 12.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
