Navy Suspends Search for Missing Sailor After Arabian Sea Helicopter Crash

Three crew members recovered after MH-60S water landing; 102-hour search covered 14,000 square miles

The U.S. Navy suspended its active search Sunday for a Sailor missing since an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter went down in the Arabian Sea on July 1, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said.

The search ended at 3 p.m. AST on July 5, the command said. The Sailor served with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush.

The helicopter’s aircrew conducted an emergency water landing at 3:30 a.m. ET on July 1, the Navy said. Three of the four crew members were recovered and are in stable condition aboard the carrier. Officials said there is no indication the emergency was caused by hostile action, and the cause remains under investigation.

The Navy and Air Force searched more than 14,000 square miles over more than 102 hours, the command said. The effort involved two aircraft carriers, five guided-missile destroyers, multiple helicopter squadrons, two P-8 Poseidon squadrons and Air Force aircraft.

Under Navy policy, the Sailor’s name will be withheld until at least 24 hours after the family has been notified.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as information becomes available.
