U.S. Central Command said Kuwaiti forces intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Iran late May 27, hours after U.S. forces intercepted five one-way attack drones in and near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to U.S. Central Command, the missile was launched toward Kuwait at 10:17 p.m. ET and was successfully intercepted by Kuwaiti forces. CENTCOM described the launch as a ceasefire violation by the Iranian regime.
The command said the missile launch followed earlier drone activity by Iranian forces. CENTCOM said five one-way attack drones posed a threat in and near the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. forces intercepted all five, according to the command, and also prevented a sixth drone launch from an Iranian ground control site in Bandar Abbas.
“U.S. Central Command and regional partners remain vigilant and measured as we continue to defend our forces and interests from unjustified Iranian aggression,” CENTCOM said.
Separately, Kuwait Army said Kuwaiti air defenses were confronting hostile missile and drone attacks. The General Staff said explosion sounds heard in the area were caused by air defense systems intercepting the attacks.
Kuwait’s military urged the public to follow security and safety instructions issued by the competent authorities.
The developments followed new U.S. military action against Iran on Wednesday. According to The Associated Press, U.S. Central Command forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that officials said posed a threat near the Strait of Hormuz.
AP reported that the U.S. military also struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that officials said was preparing to launch a fifth drone. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and commented on condition of anonymity.
The latest strikes followed U.S. military action Monday against missile launch sites and minelaying boats in southern Iran. The Pentagon described those earlier strikes as defensive, AP reported.
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran was “negotiating on fumes,” as his administration pursued a possible settlement tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing Iran’s nuclear capability, AP reported.
The U.S. has said it acted with restraint during both military actions this week because of a fragile ceasefire, according to AP.
