Officials said the bomber went down during a routine test mission in California.

A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress carrying eight people crashed shortly after takeoff Monday at Edwards Air Force Base in California, and officials said initial signs showed the crash was not survivable.

Edwards Air Force Base said the bomber crashed at 11:20 a.m. PDT during a routine test mission.

The base did not release the names of the people aboard. Officials said the crash remains under investigation.

The base closed the airfield after the crash, and all inbound aircraft were being diverted, according to AP. Non-commercial visitor passes were also suspended so the installation could focus on emergency response operations.

The Pentagon confirmed the crash to USA TODAY and said emergency crews responded immediately. Officials did not say what caused the crash.

Edwards Air Force Base is spread across parts of Kern, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties and is about 100 miles north of Los Angeles.
