KYIV, Ukraine — Three Russian drones struck the same critical infrastructure facility in Kyiv on Friday evening, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, cutting power to the system that moves water around the capital and leaving whole districts dry.
Klitschko said the power loss dropped pressure across the network. The city’s entire left bank — the Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi and Desnianskyi districts — had no water, and neither did Pecherskyi, Solomianskyi and Holosiivskyi on the right bank.
Three other districts, Sviatoshynskyi, Podilskyi and Shevchenkivskyi, were getting water at reduced pressure. Obolonskyi had its supply back.
“Three UAV strikes hit one of the capital’s critical infrastructure facilities,”
Electricity went too. DTEK, the Ukrainian energy company, reported parts of Obolonskyi, Darnytskyi, Desnianskyi and Podilskyi without power, and said the usual hourly outage schedules were suspended in the affected districts while emergency restrictions were in place.
In Shevchenkivskyi, the attack damaged a 14-story residential building, breaking windows on the sixth and seventh floors. No fire was reported there.
Crews worked through the night on the damaged facilities. In a later update, the Kyiv City State Administration said the water supply and sewage systems were working again and that the life-support systems hit by the shelling were operating normally.
The timing could hardly be worse for the city. Kyiv is due to start connecting apartment buildings to its district heating network on Monday, Nov. 2, work Klitschko has said could take up to a week. Hospitals, kindergartens and schools have had heating since Oct. 16.
