U.S. Central Command said it completed a new wave of strikes against dozens of Iranian targets at multiple locations July 12, using precision weapons against air defenses, radars, missiles, drones and small boats.
The strikes involved fighter aircraft, naval vessels and one-way attack aerial drones, CENTCOM said, along with one-way attack sea drones for the first time.
The strikes were intended to reduce Iran’s ability to attack international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the command said, adding that U.S. forces remained ready to protect commercial shipping and that Iran does not control the waterway.
CENTCOM said Sunday the strait was open and traffic was flowing. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy said it had closed the waterway after striking an unidentified vessel it accused of using an unauthorized route, Reuters reported.
CENTCOM previously said U.S. forces launched a third round of strikes after what it called a Revolutionary Guard attack on the Cyprus-flagged M/V GFS Galaxy. One civilian crew member was missing, the command said, and fire and engine room damage left the vessel unable to continue.
