US Strikes Iran, Citing Attacks on Shipping in Strait of Hormuz

Tehran calls the operations a breach of the Islamabad memorandum and warns of decisive action.

The U.S. military began launching “series of powerful strikes” against Iran in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command said Tuesday.

CENTCOM said the strikes are intended “to impose heavy costs” for targeting commercial shipping crewed by civilians in an international waterway. The command called Iran’s actions unwarranted, dangerous and a clear violation of the ceasefire.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Gharibabadi, responded on X. He said the U.S. military operations violate Articles 1 and 2 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

He also said Washington’s earlier decision to revoke a sanctions waiver on Iranian oil sales violated Article 10 of the same agreement.

Gharibabadi said the United States had violated the memorandum several times over the past three weeks, citing Israeli actions in Lebanon and threatening statements against Iran. He warned of consequences, saying Iran would act decisively to defend its national interests and security.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as more information becomes available.
