FIFA Suspends Nepal Football Body Over Third-Party Interference

Nepal cut off from international football as governing body cites outside interference in ANFA’s affairs.

FIFA suspended the All Nepal Football Association on June 24, immediately cutting the country’s national teams and clubs off from international football over what it called interference by a third party.

The Bureau of the FIFA Council took the decision on June 24, citing flagrant violations of FIFA statutes linked to interference by a third party.

Under the suspension, ANFA loses all membership rights. Its national and club teams cannot take part in competitions sanctioned by FIFA or the Asian Football Confederation until the ban is lifted.

Until the ban lifts, Nepal’s national and club sides are locked out of any competition run by FIFA or the Asian Football Confederation. — FIFA

Funding dries up too. ANFA, its officials and member bodies lose access to FIFA and AFC money, development programmes, training and courses, and FIFA has told other federations to steer clear of any sporting contact with Nepal while the ban holds.

FIFA said the suspension could be lifted before the next FIFA Congress if the underlying circumstances are resolved.

The suspension follows a prolonged governance dispute between ANFA and Nepal’s National Sports Council, according to news reports. The council had earlier suspended ANFA for three months before reversing it.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as information becomes available.
