Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused the United States on Tuesday of violating an April 8 ceasefire, saying U.S. forces carried out actions in the Hormozgan region over the past 48 hours.
The statement came after U.S. forces on Monday carried out what U.S. Central Command described as “self-defense” strikes in southern Iran, including missile launch sites and boats placing mines, according to the Associated Press.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the U.S. actions followed what it described as repeated moves against Iranian commercial vessels since the ceasefire was announced.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said the U.S. actions took place while a diplomatic process mediated by Pakistan was still underway. It accused Washington of bad faith and said the events reinforced Iran’s distrust of the U.S. government.
The ministry condemned the actions as a violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and the April 8 ceasefire agreement. It said it holds the United States responsible for any consequences.
Iran also said it would not leave what it called an act of aggression unanswered and would defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
