Trump Praises ‘Swift’ Response as Secret Service Kills Gunman Outside White House

Trump’s comments followed a Secret Service statement saying the suspect died after opening fire near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue

President Donald Trump on Saturday night thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement after an armed man was shot and killed near the White House. A bystander was also wounded in the exchange.

“Our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement” took “swift and professional action,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Trump characterized the suspect as having “a violent history and possible obsession” with the White House, though neither the Secret Service nor the FBI confirmed those details in their statements.

According to the U.S. Secret Service, the shooting happened shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue when an individual pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing.

Secret Service said its Police returned fire and struck the suspect, the agency said. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The condition of the wounded bystander was not released. The Secret Service said the investigation is ongoing.

President Trump was reportedly in the White House at the time. The Secret Service said no protectees or operations were disrupted.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the bureau had agents on scene supporting the Secret Service response.
