A suspect died and a bystander was struck by gunfire Saturday evening after an individual opened fire near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, according to the U.S. Secret Service.
The Secret Service said the shooting happened shortly after 6 p.m. when the individual pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing.
Secret Service Police returned fire, striking the suspect, the agency said. The suspect was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead.
A bystander was also shot during the incident, the agency said. The bystander’s condition was not disclosed. No officers were injured.
The shooting occurred while President Donald Trump was at the White House. No protectees or agency operations were disrupted, the Secret Service said.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI was on the scene and supporting the Secret Service response to shots fired near the White House grounds.
The White House was placed on lockdown after what Fox News described as as many as 30 shots fired in the area. The Secret Service and FBI have not confirmed that figure in the provided statements.
The Secret Service said the shooting remains under investigation.
