Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Friday that President Donald Trump called her after completing his visit to China, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In a post on X, Takaichi said Trump called while returning to the United States aboard Air Force One and provided “a detailed explanation” of his China visit. She said the two leaders exchanged views on issues involving China, including the economy, economic security and security matters.
Takaichi also said she again conveyed Japan’s position on Iran during the call.
“Moving forward, in order to further strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance and address international situations in areas such as the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East, we will continue to closely collaborate with President Trump,” Takaichi wrote.
The call came after Trump concluded his bilateral meeting with Xi in Beijing.
In a statement posted on X, the White House said Trump had “a good meeting” with Xi. The statement said the two sides discussed ways to strengthen economic cooperation between the United States and China, including expanded market access for American businesses in China and increased Chinese investment in U.S. industries.
The White House said leaders from many of the largest U.S. companies joined part of the meeting. The statement also said Trump and Xi highlighted the need to build on progress in ending the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States, along with increasing Chinese purchases of American agricultural products.
On energy and regional security, the White House said the two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy. According to the statement, Xi also made clear China’s opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use.
Xi also expressed interest in buying more American oil to reduce China’s dependence on the Strait in the future, the White House said.
The White House said both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
Trump also expressed optimism about hosting Xi in the United States in September.
The president departed Beijing Capital International Airport just after 2:40 p.m. local time Friday, ending a two-day summit in China. A brief departure ceremony was held on the tarmac before Trump boarded Air Force One for the flight back to the United States.
