Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are the “biggest common denominator” between China and the United States, Xinhua said.
The report said Xi made the remarks in talks with Trump in Beijing.
“The Taiwan question is the biggest issue in China-U.S. relations,” Xi said. He told Trump the broader relationship would be fine if the issue was handled properly.
Otherwise, the two countries may run into clashes, even conflicts, Xinhua reported.
“Taiwan independence” and peace across the Taiwan Strait are “as irreconcilable as fire and water,” Xi said, according to the report.
