BJP Ends Mamata Banerjee’s 15‑Year Reign After Landmark Victory in West Bengal

The result marks a major political shift in West Bengal as the BJP moves toward forming its first state government.

New Delhi- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to form its first government in West Bengal, while actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam delivered a major breakthrough in Tamil Nadu, according to Indian media reports on the 2026 assembly election results.

In West Bengal, the BJP won 207 seats, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80, according to the Election Commission of India. The state has 294 assembly seats, but voting in the Falta constituency is scheduled to be held again on May 21, with the result expected on May 24.

The outcome marks a sharp defeat for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress after 15 years in power. Indian media reports said Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by 15,114 votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Bengal result as a victory for governance, according to the reports. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised the Bhabanipur result in a post on X.

Banerjee rejected the result and accused the Election Commission and the BJP of irregularities. She claimed more than 100 seats had been “looted” and said she had complained to West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also backed the allegations in a post on X, according to the reports. The claims were not independently verified in the supplied material.

The BJP has not announced its chief ministerial pick for West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari is among the names being discussed in Indian media reports, while other possible candidates have also been mentioned. Reports said a swearing-in ceremony could take place on May 9, though no final official announcement was cited.

In Tamil Nadu, Vijay’s TVK won 108 seats, placing it ahead of the DMK and AIADMK, according to the Election Commission. Indian media said Vijay has written to the governor to stake claim to form the government.

The result pushes the ruling DMK out of power and gives TVK a major opening in state politics. The reports said Vijay’s campaign challenged the long-standing dominance of Tamil Nadu’s established Dravidian parties.

In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front won or leading on 100 seats in the 140-member assembly, of which Congress has 63. Meanwhile, the LDF is ahead or has won in 35 seats, according to the Election Commission. The result ended the Left Democratic Front’s hold on power in the state.

In Assam, the BJP-led alliance won 102 seats, while Congress was reduced to 21, according to the Election Commission. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s party retained its strong position in the state.

In Puducherry, the All India N.R. Congress finished ahead with 12 seats, according to the supplied reports.

The results leave two immediate leadership questions: who the BJP will choose to lead West Bengal, and when Vijay will complete the formal process to form a government in Tamil Nadu.
