President Donald Trump said Friday while leaving the White House for Florida that he is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal, which he said was delivered through Pakistani mediators as negotiations continued.
“At this moment, I’m not satisfied with what they’re offering,” Trump told reporters. “They’ve got to come up with the right deal.”
Trump said the proposal was delivered through Pakistan, which has been involved in the talks. He said phone negotiations are continuing but that Tehran has not yet offered terms he can accept.
“They want to make a deal, but I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happens,” he said. “They’ve made strides, but I’m not sure if they ever get there. They’re asking for things that I can’t agree to.”
“There are options,” Trump said, after describing a briefing with the U.S. Central Command commander. “Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever, or do we want to try and make a deal? On a human basis, I’d prefer a deal.”
Trump pushed back when asked why he had not sought congressional approval. “Nobody’s ever sought it before, nobody’s ever asked for it before — why should we be different?” he said, adding that the administration stays in regular contact with Congress.
He described the blockade as “unbelievable,” “powerful” and “100%,” while calling the Iranian negotiating team “unbelievably disjointed.” Talks, he said, are continuing.
