Trump Says Iran Is in ‘State of Collapse,’ Wants Hormuz Reopened

Trump’s post came after reports that Iran sent a proposal through Pakistan focused on reopening Hormuz and delaying nuclear talks.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran had informed the United States it was in a “State of Collapse” and wanted Washington to “Open the Hormuz Strait” as soon as possible.

Trump made the claim in a post on Truth Social, saying Iran was trying to address what he described as its leadership situation.

“They want us to ‘Open the Hormuz Strait,’ as soon as possible,” Trump wrote.

Trump also said he believed Iran would be able to address that issue, but he gave no further details.

Trump did not elaborate on the reported Iranian message.

Trump’s remarks came after Iran reportedly sent a letter to the United States through Pakistan on Sunday.

Iran sent the United States a new proposal through Pakistani mediators that was aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, while leaving nuclear negotiations for a later phase, Axios reported Sunday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed written messages to the United States through Pakistan during his recent regional trip, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Sunday.

The proposal focuses first on the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. blockade of Iran. The Associated Press reported that Tehran wants the blockade lifted as part of any arrangement. Axios reported that Trump wants to keep the blockade in place as leverage during negotiations.

Iran’s nuclear program would not be handled immediately under the reported framework. Axios reported that talks over Iran’s nuclear program would be delayed until a later stage, after any initial arrangement on the Strait of Hormuz and the blockade.
