Bilal A. Essayli, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, said federal authorities arrested Shamim Mafi at Los Angeles International Airport on allegations that she brokered arms sales for Iran.
Mafi, 44, of Woodland Hills, is accused of arranging deals involving Iranian-made drones, bombs, bomb fuses and millions of rounds of ammunition allegedly sold to Sudan, according to Essayli’s post on X.
She was charged under 50 U.S.C. § 1705, the post said.
Essayli said Mafi is an Iranian national who became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in 2016.
If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
She is scheduled to make her initial appearance Monday afternoon in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles. Like all defendants, she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
