Gunfire investigation near Lafayette Park leaves heightened security in place

U.S. Secret Service officers responded shortly after midnight Sunday, April 5, to reports of gunfire near Lafayette Park, across from the White House, and the agency said its investigation was still active.

According to the U.S. Secret Service, officers searched Lafayette Park and the surrounding area but did not locate a suspect. The agency said no injuries were reported.

The agency said its officers, working with the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police, were seeking a possible vehicle and a person of interest.

White House operations remained normal, the Secret Service said in the statement, while a heightened security posture stayed in place. Road closures also remained in effect in the area.

The agency did not release further details about the reported gunfire, the possible vehicle, or the person of interest.
