Argentina Expels Iran’s Top Diplomat, Orders Exit in 48 Hours

Buenos Aires says the expulsion follows offensive remarks from Iran and years of non-cooperation in the AMIA bombing investigation.

Argentina on Thursday ordered Iran’s acting top diplomat in Buenos Aires to leave the country within 48 hours after declaring him persona non grata, according to an official statement posted on X by Deputy Economy Minister Pablo Quirno.

The ministry said the order applies to Mohsen Soltani Tehrani, identified as Iran’s counsellor and chargé d’affaires ad interim in Argentina. It said the move was made under Article 9 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

In the statement, Argentina said the decision was a response to remarks issued a day earlier by Iran’s Foreign Ministry. Buenos Aires described those accusations as false, offensive and improper, and said they were directed at Argentina and its highest authorities.

The government said the comments amounted to an unacceptable intrusion into the country’s internal affairs. It also accused Iran of deliberately misrepresenting decisions taken under international law and Argentina’s own legal system.

The statement said the latest clash adds to Argentina’s long-standing complaint that Iran has not cooperated with Argentine courts in the AMIA bombing case. It also pointed to what it called repeated failures to comply with international arrest and extradition orders tied to the case.

Buenos Aires said it would not accept insults or interference from a state it accuses of repeatedly blocking the path to justice. It said Argentina remains committed to memory, justice, the fight against terrorism and respect for international law.
