The Pentagon on Thursday asked the White House to approve more than $200 billion in additional funding for the war in Iran, a request that could trigger a major battle in Congress if it moves forward. The figure was first reported by Reuters.
The proposed plan will make military expenditure even higher than it already is. In January, Trump asked for a $1.5 trillion defense budget for 2027, which is more than the $901 billion that was granted for 2026, according to Reuters.
The amount of funding that was asked for is also much more than what the federal government now spends on education. The U.S. Department of Education will have $79 billion to spend until September 30, 2026.
The White House has not yet announced the final number to the public. Reports say that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not lock in the specific number and said that the sum might still alter before any formal proposal gets to Capitol Hill.
The proposal is already raising serious questions over how long the war may last, what the administration expects to achieve, and how much more Congress may be asked to spend. Any supplemental request of that size would face close scrutiny from lawmakers demanding a clearer explanation of the war’s cost and strategy.
