Qatar on Wednesday formally ordered Iran’s military attaché, security attaché, and staff working in both offices at the Iranian embassy in Doha to leave the country within 24 hours, according to an official statement from Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry said it delivered a formal memorandum to the Iranian embassy stating that the officials had been declared persona non grata.
The Ministry said that the decision was conveyed during a meeting between Ibrahim Yusuf Fakhroo, director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, and Ali Saleh Abadi, Iran’s ambassador to Qatar.
The move came in response to what the Ministry described as repeated Iranian targeting and aggression against the Gulf state, which it said violated Qatar’s sovereignty and security.
Qatar described the action as a “flagrant violation” of international laws, UN Security Council Resolution 2817, as well as the principles of good neighborly relations.
Qatar has given Iran a 24-hour ultimatum to vacate all members of the Iranian embassy in Qatar after declaring that if Iran continues with this hostile behavior, Qatar will take all necessary steps to protect Qatar’s sovereignty, security, and interests.
