President Donald Trump on Wednesday continued his anti-Iran rhetoric, posting on his Truth Social platform that Iran is perceived as the world’s “number one state sponsor of terror” and that the United States is “rapidly putting them out of business.”
This post comes after a wider United States and Iran confrontation and shortly after another message on Truth Social suggesting that the United States could “finish off” what he termed the remaining Iranian “terror state.”
In his previous message, President Trump also questioned why the United States should be responsible for defending the maritime activities of nations that it considers allies. This was interpreted as an obvious reference to tensions involving the Strait of Hormuz. It is still unclear whether these messages from Trump signal an actual shift or simply an attempt to put pressure on both allies and Iran.
The United States and Iran began their current conflict on February 28, when both nations and Israel engaged in massive airstrikes against Iranian military sites and leadership, including reports of the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has also engaged in missile and drone strikes against Israel, the United States, and other Middle Eastern nations considered allies.
The conflict has since widened into an all-out war, with many casualties, strikes against energy facilities, and massive disruptions of oil supplies, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, an important waterway for global energy shipments.
The U.S. is saying that its strikes against Iran have been intended to reduce Iranian military and nuclear power.
