Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is “safe and sound” despite claims he had been injured during the war between Iran and Israel and the USA, Yousef Pezeshkian, the son of Iran’s president, said Wednesday in a message published on Telegram.
Pezeshkian said he had heard reports of Mojtaba Khamenei being injured in the war and had contacted people he knew had connections to the Iranian authorities. He then said that these people had informed him that, “thank God,” Mojtaba Khamenei is safe and has no problem.
The statement came amid confusion about Mojtaba Khamenei’s condition, with Iranian state television having announced him to be a “wounded veteran” of the so-called Ramadan war, according to Reuters.
The lack of any official announcement from Mojtaba Khamenei has only fueled speculation about his condition. Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, had been appointed supreme leader of Iran following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the war, according to Reuters. Since then, he has not made any public announcement to the Iranian people or issued any written statement, according to the source material provided.
According to the source material provided, The New York Times, citing three Iranian officials, announced Wednesday that Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured in the war, including his legs, but remained alert and had taken shelter at a very secure location and had little means of communication.
Reuters separately reported Wednesday that an official from Israel announced that Mojtaba Khamenei had been lightly wounded in the attacks, although there has been no official Iranian announcement about Mojtaba Khamenei’s condition.
For now, Pezeshkian’s Telegram post is the clearest public statement from inside Iran’s leadership circle saying the country’s new supreme leader is unharmed, while reports of possible injuries remain unresolved.
