Turkey on Monday said that a ballistic projectile fired from Iran entered Turkish airspace but was intercepted by NATO air and missile defense systems in the Eastern Mediterranean. This is the second such incident within a period of less than a week. Turkey’s Ministry of Defense declared that the fragments of the intercepted projectile fell in Gaziantep Province on empty land. According to the Turkish Ministry of Defense, “There were no deaths or injuries.” Turkey declared that all measures will be taken “decisively and without hesitation” against any kind of threat to Turkish territory and airspace, while urging all parties to “take heed” of Turkey’s warnings.

Additionally, the U.S. State Department said that it had issued a security alert for southeastern Turkey. It was announced that the U.S. consular services in Adana had been suspended.
Turkey hosts the NATO early warning radar systems in the town of Kürecik. Turkey and Iran enjoy trade relations but have long had rivalries for dominance in the Middle East.
