I-495 Stabbings Turn Deadly in Fairfax: 1 Woman Killed, 3 Hurt; Trooper Shoots Suspect, VSP Says

Preliminary findings indicate the stabbings followed a crash on the southbound Beltway; the trooper is on administrative leave pending review.

A woman and a dog were killed in a stabbing attack on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County on Sunday afternoon, and a Virginia State Police trooper fatally shot the suspect after being confronted at the scene, police said.

In an update posted by Virginia State Police, the agency said the incident happened about 1:20 p.m. March 1, 2026, on I-495 southbound at Exit 52. A state trooper was called around 1:17 p.m. for a reported road rage incident.

Police said the trooper encountered a male suspect carrying a knife and shot him in self-defense. The suspect, identified as Jared Llamado, 32, of McLean, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and later died. The trooper was not injured.

At the scene, troopers found four stabbing victims. Virginia State Police said Michelle Adams, 39, died from her injuries. A dog that was stabbed also died. Three other women — ages 36, 37 and 40 — were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries.

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the stabbings followed a crash on the southbound Beltway. The crash remains under investigation. Police said the incident is not believed to be terrorism-related.

The trooper involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues, Virginia State Police said.
