Russia Hits Ukraine With 71 Missiles, 450 Drones as Zelenskyy Calls for New U.S. Sanctions

NATO chief Mark Rutte said he saw a civilian heating plant in Kyiv hit by Russian missiles, calling it a strike with “no military value whatsoever.”

The Russian military attacked Ukraine overnight using air strikes in a massive operation as temperatures plunged to record lows. Resident Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this was a move by Russia to blow past a de-escalation push made by the U.S. after a meeting in Abu Dhabi.

In a series of posts on X, President Zelenskyy said the U.S. had agreed to a cease-fire in the strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure so diplomacy could continue this week. However, Russia launched a strike consisting of 71 missiles and 450 drones against Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy said this was a deliberate escalation of the strike as temperatures plunged to record lows. The strike, as reported by Ukraine, again targets essential infrastructure.

The strike has resulted in serious damage to the country’s infrastructure, including the capital’s heating and electricity systems.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during his visit to Kyiv today said he witnessed a civilian heating plant being attacked by Russian missiles. Sharing a video clip, he said there was a civilian heating plant there, and “this plant has absolutely no military value whatsoever.” However, this attack was intended to inflict pain on Ukraine, but Ukraine still has the support of NATO.

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine also condemned the strike and said Russia showed it was not serious about de-escalation, as there were additional strikes targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure, including the region of Zaporizhzhia.

A Russian drone strike in this region killed two 18-year-old men, as reported by Reuters.

However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is waiting to see how the U.S. reacts, as Russia has rejected a one-week de-escalation push proposed by the U.S.
