President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed “theft and fraud” in Minnesota is far greater than “$19 billion,” accusing the Biden administration of looking the other way and attacking prominent Democrats in the state.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said officials “knew this FRAUD was happening” and “did absolutely nothing.” He did not cite any documentation in the post to support the dollar figure. The message also included personal attacks and calls for punishment directed at Rep. Ilhan Omar and Gov. Tim Walz.
Walz pushed back in a message on X, writing that Minnesota “may be known for our lakes, Bob Dylan, and Prince,” but that its civic engagement “runs deeper.” Walz added, “If Donald Trump intended to make an example out of Minnesota, then I am damn proud of that example.”
Omar also criticized Trump during a CNN interview on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, after host Kaitlan Collins asked about Trump’s comment suggesting Omar may have staged a recent attack on herself. “The difference between the President and me is that I was raised to be a decent human being, and my faith teaches me to have compassion, and he lacks both of those things,” Omar said on CNN.
Omar later posted the line on X in two sentences, ending with, “He lacks both of those things.”
The clash comes as Minnesota remains under national scrutiny for major fraud prosecutions tied to federally funded programs. According to a January factbox by Reuters, a major issue concerning the Feeding Our Future foundation is about the alleged loss of $250 million that was supposed to go to feeding children during the pandemic.
