Business Jet With Eight Aboard Crashes During Takeoff at Bangor Airport

FAA says a Challenger 600 went down during takeoff in Bangor, Maine, with eight on board and an investigation underway.

A business jet carrying eight people crashed during takeoff at Bangor International Airport in Maine on Sunday night, federal officials said.

The plane, identified by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Bombardier Challenger 600 twinjet, apparently crashed on approach to depart around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. The status of the eight on board the plane was unknown, the agency said.

The FAA said it will lead a joint investigation into the incident with the National Transportation Safety Board, which said in a news release that “the information provided in any such reports is preliminary and subject to change.”

In its Bangor International Airport Facebook account, the airport asked locals to avoid the area as first responders arrived on the scene to assess.

Within a separate announcement made via an update on January 25 for the airport, the airport declared its closure, stating flights are being canceled. The public is asked to call the airline to obtain the latest information on the impact to your travel. The airport added that its emergency operation center has been opened, with crews likely to stay at the site for several hours, with another update in the morning, 8 a.m. Monday.

Bangor International Airport is the primary commercial hub for the Bangor area and also functions as an airport for some charter and military events. Normally, separate but coordinated investigations are performed when aviation incidents are serious, and the investigations aim at finding out what occurred and whether any new safety recommendations are required.
