Russia Launches Massive Overnight Barrage, Knocks Out Heat in Kyiv

Kyiv reported at least one death as strikes hit energy sites and civilian buildings.

Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with one of the war’s largest combined drone-and-missile barrages, killing at least one person in Kyiv, wounding civilians in multiple regions, and knocking out heat and power as temperatures stayed below freezing.

The Ukrainian ministry of foreign affairs said that this attack saw more than 370 attack drones, as well as 21 missiles, strike Ukrainian cities and regions. The Ukrainian ministry of foreign affairs portrayed this attack as a “prolonging terror” from Moscow, indicating that Moscow is giving more focus and priority to augmenting terror rather than diplomacy, especially amid efforts from the U.S.-led initiative that seeks a breakthrough in a peace initiative.

President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the targets in Ukraine include Kyiv and its environs, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv,” adding that “one person was killed, and dozens injured,” including “a child,” as “emergency services and utility workers” addressed the damage caused to these areas.

In Kyiv, the foreign ministry reported energy infrastructure had been damaged in the capital city as well as in other areas close to it, leaving almost 6,000 buildings without heat in cold conditions. Some of the buildings had been damaged earlier in the month as well.

The Kharkiv regional center sustained damage to a maternity hospital, an IDP’s dorm, and a medical college, as well as several residential properties. The foreign ministry reported that at least 19 were injured in the Kharkiv region.

This barrage comes as part of Washington’s efforts toward progress in a resolution, as it is now nearly four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February of last year.

Zelenskyy reiterated, “The strikes are another reminder of our growing urgency in receiving air defense systems and air interceptors as quickly as possible and to implement commitments fully and in line with what we discussed with President Trump at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos.”
