A national civil rights law firm representing the family of Renee Good said it has sent an evidence preservation letter to the federal government, demanding that officials safeguard physical and digital material tied to Good’s fatal shooting during a federal operation in Minneapolis.
Good was fatally shot on Jan. 7, 2026, during what the family’s attorneys describe as a federal operation in Minneapolis involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The firm said the family and its legal team denounce violence and called for what it described as “constitutional policing,” urging agents to use force prudently and proportionally.
On January 14, the family of Renee Nicole Macklin Good retained attorneys to conduct a civil investigation into her fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during a federal operation in Minneapolis.
In a Thursday statement, Romanucci & Blandin said the letter is intended to formally notify the government of its representation, reinforce that civil litigation is underway, and prevent the destruction of potential evidence. The firm said it is making the document public as part of what it described as a transparency effort in its investigation.
The preservation demand seeks a broad range of items “in any form,” the firm said, including physical evidence such as Good’s vehicle and electronically stored information. The firm said it is also seeking videos and communications between agents, among other records. The firm warned that if evidence is not kept, the government could face penalties for not following the law and doing the right thing.
The law firm also addressed false information that the company claims had been spreading online concerning Good’s past. Romanucci & Blandin said there is no record of Good having a criminal or felony history and said neither Good nor her partner, Becca Good, has a criminal record. The firm said both have only traffic citations from years ago and called circulating claims of an extensive criminal history, including fabricated mugshots, “unequivocally false.” The firm told reporters to check their facts and warned it plans to take legal action against anyone it thinks is spreading false information.
