President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is taking steps to ban large institutional investors from purchasing additional single-family homes, framing the move as a response to housing affordability pressures, according to Truth Social.
In the post, Trump argued that “record high inflation” has pushed the traditional “American Dream” of homeownership further out of reach, particularly for younger Americans. He blamed the problem on President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress and said he would ask lawmakers to “codify” a ban.
“People live in homes, not corporations,” Trump wrote. He said he plans to discuss the proposal — along with other housing and affordability ideas — during a speech in Davos in about two weeks.
Trump didn’t say how he would put such a restriction into effect, such as what legal authority he would use right away, how “large institutional investors” would be defined, or if the prohibition would simply apply to future purchases or also affect current holdings.
