The U.S. Department of State has raised its Nepal advisory to Level 3 — “Reconsider Travel” — citing deadly unrest and fast-changing security conditions following large protests on Sept. 8–9. The notice warns that demonstrations turned violent and that local authorities declared curfews in major cities, including Kathmandu and Pokhara. Officials caution that additional protests and movement restrictions could be announced with little notice.
The advisory says emergency services in Nepal have a limited ability to respond during crises and notes that some hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara were set on fire during the turmoil. Travelers are urged to follow police instructions, avoid protest areas and large gatherings, and monitor local news for updates.
Americans already in Nepal are advised to have an independent plan to depart in an emergency that does not rely on U.S. government assistance, to be ready to evacuate hotels quickly, and to reconfirm flights before heading to the airport. The department also recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive embassy alerts and to help officials reach travelers or their emergency contacts if needed.
