Hami Nepal Says Mahesh Basnet Is A Liar

Youth group denies talks with Mahesh Basnet, urges public to stay cautious.

Hami Nepal, operated by a group of Nepali youth, issued an “official press release” on Saturday rejecting claims by CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet that the group’s coordinator, Sudan Gurung, has been in talks to join his party. The statement, posted on Hami Nepal’s official channels, calls the assertion false and urges the public not to be misled.

In the release, the group says no conversations took place with Basnet and none will in the future. “These conversations have never happened and never will,” the statement reads. It adds, “We stand only with the people. Always.”

Basnet’s remarks about possible talks with Gurung were reported by Corporate Nepal on Friday, drawing quick pushback from Hami Nepal’s leaders and supporters online. Virginia Times has not independently reviewed the full video referenced by Hami Nepal.

“Hami Nepal” has emerged as a central voice in the youth-driven anti-corruption Gen-Z movement that surged nationwide this month, contributing to a fast-moving political crisis and the formation of an interim government. The protests, led largely by younger Nepalis, followed anger over corruption and restrictions on online platforms.

The group has also used its social pages in recent days to rebut viral rumors about joining any government body and to emphasize that its members intend to remain independent of partisan control.

Basnet is a senior CPN-UML figure from Bhaktapur and a former industry minister, a frequent presence in Kathmandu’s political debates. He drew attention this week with comments about the protest movement and its leaders. (Background on Basnet from Nepali outlets and public profiles.)

Saturday’s exchange highlights a broader fight over narrative and legitimacy as Nepal’s youth activists try to hold together a loose, street-level coalition while traditional parties seek to shape the transition. Hami Nepal framed its message as a warning against disinformation, telling supporters to “stay cautious” and “stay united.”

As of publication, Virginia Times could not immediately verify any official response from Basnet addressing Hami Nepal’s latest statement.
