U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called a Russian drone incursion into Poland’s airspace earlier this week “unacceptable,” while saying the United States has not determined whether the aircraft were directed at Poland specifically.
“We think it’s an unacceptable and unfortunate and dangerous development,” Rubio told reporters before departing for Israel and the United Kingdom. “No doubt about it: the drones were intentionally launched. The question is whether the drones were targeted to go into Poland specifically.”
Rubio said the United States is reviewing the incident and consulting with Poland and other NATO allies about next steps. He did not detail potential responses, emphasizing that policymakers are still gathering facts.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on travel to Israel and the United Kingdom from Sept. 13–18 to advance U.S. priorities on the Israel-Hamas war and regional security, the State Department said. The trip will reaffirm U.S. support for Israel and press efforts to ensure Hamas does not return to governing Gaza while work continues to bring all hostages home, according to the department’s statement.
In Israel, Rubio will discuss operational objectives tied to Operation Gideon’s Chariots II and U.S. efforts to counter unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state and lawfare at the ICC and ICJ. He will also meet families of hostages and underscore that securing their relatives’ release remains a top U.S. priority.
Rubio will then travel to London to join the President’s delegation for a second State Visit and meet with U.K. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. Talks will focus on ending the Russia-Ukraine war, preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, securing the release of Hamas-held hostages and a cease-fire in Gaza, and coordinating on long-term competition with China, the department said.
