KATHMANDU, Nepal — The death toll in the Gen-G movement has crossed a dozen. According to sources from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the death toll in the protest is increasing so far.
Hospital officials told reporters that there were deaths at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC), the National Trauma Center, Civil Hospital, and Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Home Ministry sources said this was a summary of what they said. According to the same sources, six individuals have died at the National Trauma Center, and the same number of patients are still in serious condition.
Authorities reported that police opened fire after protesters crossed security barriers and entered the grounds of the federal parliament building in New Baneshwor. According to hospital officials, the injured were first sent to Civil Hospital in New Baneshwor and Everest Hospital. Those who were critically hurt were then moved to the National Trauma Center and KMC.
Organizers said that the Gen-Z coalition started a march at 9 a.m. from Maitighar Mandala to protest corruption, problems with government, and a proposed ban on unregistered social media platforms. Local officials said that as the procession got to New Baneshwor, it turned aggressive, which led to a quick increase in police presence.
In response, the Kathmandu District Administration Office added more places under the curfew besides New Baneshwor. The agency said that Maharajgunj around Sheetal Niwas is now off-limits, and a curfew is in effect up to the crossroads in front of the Police Training Institute to the northeast.
District officials said that there is also a curfew around the vice president’s house in Lainchaur, which is limited to the area from Keshar Mahal Chowk to the Malla Hotel area through Lainchaur Mode.
The area around the Narayanhiti Palace Museum is also under curfew. It goes from Keshar Mahal Chowk to the museum’s south gate, Jai Nepal crossroads, and up to the Mahendra statue.
The main administrative building in the country, Singha Durbar, is also under curfew. Chhabi Rijal, the Chief District Officer, said that the restricted area goes from the eastern corner of Bhadrakali Temple to the main gate of Singha Durbar, and from Padmodaya Mode east through the Office of the Auditor General to Anamnagar, then through the Supreme Court grounds to the Department of Archaeology junction.
The district administration noted that the curfew is in place on Monday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time.
