WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump put no timeline on it, and he offered no path. But on Friday he told Kansas City radio station KCMO that the war with Iran is “going to get wrapped up soon.”
“We need a guarantee there’ll never be a nuclear weapon”
Trump has said the United States will not strike Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. On Friday he also said the war would end “one way or another.”
The remarks landed while Qatari mediators were back in Tehran. A source familiar with the diplomacy told CBS News the mediators carried the latest edits to a draft proposal to end the war, and that there were indications of progress.
Iran is expected to respond by the weekend. A draft was first presented on Sunday, and the aim, CBS News reported, is to head off a return to U.S. military action, which Trump has threatened repeatedly in recent weeks.
The gaps have not moved much. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Qatar had brought only “unacceptable” ideas, and that Tehran would not change its stance on the nuclear issue. Washington wants the nuclear program in the talks from the start.
For Tehran, the first step looks different. Reuters reported its officials want the blockade of Iranian ports lifted, and the sanctions holding back oil and gas sales dropped, before any of that.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X on Wednesday. Tehran, he wrote, “continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed.” He said Iran was working with mediators on ideas drawn from a proposal Tehran floated last month. Trump rejected that proposal at the time.
A letter from Vice President JD Vance to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei has added to the confusion. The Wall Street Journal reported the letter focused on a possible negotiating framework. Trump said on Thursday it was meant only to help get medical supplies into Iran. Iranian media reported Tehran has not yet answered it.
No deal was announced on Friday.
