TEHRAN, Iran — Qatar’s mediators are back in Tehran. They returned Friday, working on a deal between the U.S. and Iran, an official briefed on the talks told Reuters.
This round has been coordinated with Washington, the official said.
The delegation is led by a senior adviser to Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister, according to IRNA, Iran’s state-run news agency. The Qatari officials were due to sit down with senior Iranian officials, IRNA said, and the agenda covered bilateral ties and regional developments.
The trip follows a draft peace plan Qatar handed to Iran on Sunday. It did not land well. A senior Iranian official called the proposals unacceptable and said Tehran was not moving on the nuclear issue.
Washington wants that issue on the table from day one. Tehran’s order is different: end the blockade on Iranian ports first, and lift the sanctions limiting its oil and gas sales.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, said Wednesday that Tehran had stayed in close contact with intermediaries. The contact, he said, was about reviewing ideas for putting Iran’s own seven-day proposal into effect, a plan meant to end the war in the Middle East. He made the same point on X that day, writing that Tehran “continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed.”
Thursday brought a different note from Washington. President Donald Trump said Vice President JD Vance’s outreach to Iran was about medical supplies. News reports had cast that outreach as an attempt to get peace talks moving again.
Tehran still has not answered Vance’s letter. The letter went to Mohsen Rezaei, who heads Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, according to Tasnim, the semi-official Iranian news agency.
