Renfe Reports Deaths in Accident Involving 2 Trains in Spain

Rail traffic between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia halted after the accident near Urda.

MADRID — An accident involving two trains in Spain’s Toledo province left people dead and injured Wednesday morning, according to Spanish rail operator Renfe.

One was Renfe’s 8 a.m. AVE from Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station, due at Seville’s Santa Justa station at 10:39 a.m. The other was an Iryo train. They were between Los Yébenes and Urda, and trains are no longer running between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia.

Renfe did not release casualty figures or give a cause. Its first priority, according to the statement, is learning the extent of the harm while staying available to those affected, authorities and emergency services.

Company staff are focused on caring for victims and their families. Renfe activated its crisis unit from the start, along with its assistance plan for railway accident victims and their families, known by the Spanish acronym PAVAFF. Victims and relatives can call a dedicated hotline at 900 10 10 20.

Renfe’s security and passenger-assistance teams are working with emergency services, Adif and Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. The operator expressed its support for everyone affected and thanked its own workers, Adif staff, security forces, emergency crews and others helping victims at the scene.

Emiliano García-Page, president of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, wrote in a post on X that he was following the Urda accident “with attention and concern.” He was on his way to the site, he added, and he and the rest of his government were suspending their schedules.

Renfe is still gathering information to assess the situation. The company plans to share updates as new details come in and the full extent of the accident becomes clear.
