Fires at Russian Steel and Chemical Plants After Overnight Attacks

Moscow claimed 531 Ukrainian drones were destroyed as Russia kept up its own strikes on Ukraine

Fires were reported at Russia’s Novolipetsk steel plant and at the Azot chemical plant in the Tula region after overnight attacks on Oct. 28, according to the Kyiv Post.

Moscow claimed its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 531 Ukrainian drones. Kyiv has not commented on its involvement, the Kyiv Post reported.

The Azot plant is in Novomoskovsk, in the Tula region. According to The Sun, it supplies nitric acid for explosives used in artillery shells.

Novolipetsk, known as NLMK, sits in the Lipetsk region and is Russia’s largest steel plant. The Sun described the plant as crucial to Russian production of air defense systems, drones, missiles and other weapons.

Russia kept up its own strikes on Ukraine. At least five people were wounded in Kharkiv, among them a 4-year-old boy, The Sun reported.

Russian forces also attacked four districts of the Dnipropetrovsk region with drones, artillery, an air bomb and a missile, according to The Sun. In Slovyansk, in Ukraine-controlled Donetsk region, a residential building was destroyed after two KAB-250 glide bombs were launched.

The strikes came as President Donald Trump said he plans to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy together. “There’ll be a meeting set up very soon and I think a lot of progress could be made,” Trump said as he stepped off Air Force One, according to The Sun.

Zelenskyy said on Sunday that a trilateral meeting between Kyiv, Washington and Moscow would take place in November. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks on Tuesday that “nothing new was discussed,” according to The Sun.
